Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties (SLDs)

Specific Learning Difficulties (SLDs) are lifelong conditions that affect the way a person learns. They are not a sign of laziness or low intelligence—children with SLDs simply learn differently.

At Monad Charity Specific Learning Disabilities Support Centre, we primarily support children with:

  • Dyslexia – challenges with reading and writing
  • Dysorthographia – difficulties with spelling and written expression
  • Dyscalculia – difficulties with understanding math and numbers
  • ADHD – difficulties with attention, focus, and impulse control

SLDs are often invisible—but they are real. Early recognition and the right support can make a world of difference.

What We See at Monad Charity Learning Centre

Every day, we meet children who:

  • Struggle to read, remember, or focus
  • Are labelled as lazy, stupid (bet, in Kreol), or disruptive (dezorder)
  • Find it hard to adapt to the mainstream school system

But with love, patience, and a non-judgmental approach, we help them thrive—and we witness incredible transformations.

“I used to think I was stupid. Now I know I just learn differently.”

Platform IDEAL

To strengthen the cause, we’ve launched Platform IDEAL (Identification des Difficultés d’Apprentissage et de la Lecture). This initiative brings together NGOs, professionals, and institutions across Mauritius to build a stronger network of support for children with learning difficulties.

Signs of a Possible SLD

  • Avoids reading out loud
  • Always distracted or restless
  • Struggles to copy from the board
  • Gets anxious before going to school
  • Often says things like “I can’t do it” or appears very unconfident

How You Can Help

  • Parents: Observe, listen, ask questions—and learn more about SLDs
  • Teachers: Adjust your methods, create a safe space, avoid shame
  • Everyone: Speak kindly, be understanding, and get informed
