Providing Children from Vulnerable Areas with Healthy and Safe Leisure
Background:
As per Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN, 1989), children have “the right to rest and leisure, to engage in a wide range of play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child.” Reports show that many young people in vulnerable communities are idle, which can lead to social ills and other problems. There is a real need for appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational, and leisure activities for children in these areas. Monad Charity recognizes this need and has been working to provide children in vulnerable communities with access to safe, healthy, and educational leisure activities.
Problem Statement:
One of the key challenges faced by children and young people in vulnerable areas such as Résidence Anoska is the lack of appropriate infrastructure, which makes it difficult for them to engage in safe leisure and socialization activities. Many of these children lack access to productive activities and are vulnerable to social ills such as drug abuse, crime, and other related issues. Providing safe and healthy leisure activities can protect these children and promote their holistic development.
Project Description:
Monad Charity seeks to provide accessible, safe, and healthy leisure activities for children and young people in vulnerable areas, thus ensuring their holistic development. The goal is to organize outings, educational, and development activities, including visits to cultural and recreational areas, educational sessions, and other fun activities that promote positive outcomes.
Our current activities have been successful, and we have been able to take children to Casela leisure park, organize cinema sessions at MCINE of Trianon, and outings to restaurants, among other fun activities. It is important to us that we organize these activities regularly, which will give children and young people an opportunity to socialize, learn, and enjoy leisure time in a safe and positive environment.
Implementation Plan:
Monad Charity will organize a series of educational and developmental activities for children and young people in the vulnerable community of Résidence Anoska, Mauritius. We will begin constructing appropriate infrastructure, setting up the necessary resources, and engaging qualified coaches to ensure that the activities are safe, healthy, and educational. We will organize focus group sessions to ensure our activities cater to the needs and desires of the children.
Our planned activities will include arts and crafts classes, music lessons, sports competitions, IT workshops, and field trips to cultural and recreational areas. These activities will help children develop their creative and practical skills, improve their physical fitness, and develop their social skills.
Funding:
Monad Charity is currently seeking sponsors for this project. The funds will go towards the construction of infrastructure, resources, qualified coaches, and transportation to cultural and recreational areas for outings. Each outing is estimated to cost USD 1000. We welcome any sponsorship with open arms, and we’ll acknowledge your contribution in our newsletters and annual reports. We aim to extend this project beyond Résidence Anoska to reach other areas with similar challenges and needs.
Conclusion:
By providing children and young people in vulnerable areas with healthy and safe leisure activities, Monad Charity is empowering them, enabling them to develop their skills and talents while also fostering positivity and socialization. This project is critical to promoting equality, justice, and equity in society and developing future leaders. We strive towards achieving our purpose of ensuring that every child in Mauritius has equal opportunities to thrive, regardless of their socio-economic background.
